The Church of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) remains the dominant force in Utah politics. Hostile to women's rights, the church establishment opposed ratification of the ERA and even excommunicated Mormon women political activists.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, in 2009 the Utah State Legislature was far from geneder parity at 22.1% female. By comparison the Colorado State Legislature is 39% female.
