USDemocrat Network
From Left Space
The USDemocrat Network is the largest internet inter-connected network of democratic activists and voters in the history of the internet. The USDN was originally created in 2000 as a single "E-group" in Louisiana as part of the effort to elect Al Gore. After the election a group of prominent political minds began thinking of a way to expand on the sucess of the Louisiana internet effort. By the end of 2000, the USDemocrat Network was born.
E-groups was later consumed by Yahoo! and the network continues to this day as part of Yahoo! groups, although mirror groups are carried on other internet providers.
Unlike other loose coalitions, the USDemocrat Network is a complete internet network operated by an all volunteer army of moderators in all 50 states. The moderators keep spam and disruptions from the groups and help keep each group focused on local efforts.
All of the moderators are members of the governing board. The National Coordinator (elected annually) and the USDN Executive Committee assist in coordinating state to state efforts. The network has a constitution and bylaws.
The USDemocrat Network also assists local democratic clubs or committees in setting up and maintaining groups.
The USDemocrat Network is not a political organization in the common sense of the meaning. Although it's membership numbers in the hundreds of thousands and it's outreach by email is to more than a million democrats world-wide, the USDN has no offices, collects no money and is not accountable to the Democratic National Committee or any local/state party. As stated by one of it's founders, Michael Fagan, "The USDN is not the message. It is not the messenger. It is the soapbox on which the messenger can stand to deliver his message. Our job is to gather democrats together so that others can deliver the marching orders." To that end, the USDemocrat Network has assisted in the launch or been the catalyst for such efforts as Democracy For America and MoveOn.org and dozens of others.
