Patriotism is adherence to a set of political philosophical principles embodied in the institutions of a state. For example, American patriotism involves adherence to liberal democracy expressed through self-government, political equality and the rule of law. Patriotism differs from nationalism, which is attachment to a nation defined in terms of the linguistic, religious or ethno-racial identity of its population.
