From Left Space
Optimism about the possibility of improving living conditions for everyone so that every individual can realize their full human potential is at the heart of the American Left tradition. Against the Right's grinding negativity and appeals to the worst impulses, the democratic Left offers hope for renewal.
The "Left" in the United States is the side of the political spectrum that looks to the olive branch of peace, symbolized by the eagle in the Great Seal.American Liberalism, and specifically the platform of the the Democratic Party in the United States, is sometimes considered "right wing" when compared with the communist and neo-communist political parties and social movements abroad and at home. The reality is that it has always occupied the center-left in the Amereican political ideological spectrum, just as conservatives have usually occupied the center-right. Today American liberalism occupies approximately the same political ideological and public policy space as the social-democratic parties of Western Europe, Canada, and Australia such as the British Labour Party, the French Socilalist Party, the German Social-Democratic Party, the Canadian New Democratic Party and the Australian Labor Party. The increasingly important question for Amercian democracy is whether the Republican Party continues to occupy just the center-right or has begun to goose-step farther to the right.
