France, a.k.a. the French Republic is a sovereign country in Western Europe. Several overseas departments and territories, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and Mayotte, are also part of France. It is one of only three countries (with Morocco and Spain) to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. Due to its shape, it is often referred to in French as l’Hexagone or the Hexagon.
Franco-phobia is as venerable tradition in Britain as Anglo-phobia is in France. One need not look too closely to see an element of envy in both. Anglo-Saxons envy French sensuality while the French envy British geographical distance from Germany. Americans inherited and added to the British prejudice against France and the French. France is the butt of many jokes in America, but many see France as a good example of how some social democratic domestic policies succeed. Some Anglo-Saxons are offended by the relatively generous social welafare provision in France. They would prefer that family values be a matter of values (now yuo see them now you don't) rather than actual results.
The current president of France is the unfortunate 'Socialist' Francois Hollande.
- Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby 2006 film that offers a brutally funny take on the stupity of American Franco-phobia.
