Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani اکبر هاشمی رفسنجانی Hashemi Bahramani هاشمی بهرمانی is the former President of Iran and now the chair of the Expediency Council.
Rafsanjani was President of Iran from 1989 until 1997. His successor was Mohammad Khatami, who served from 1997 until 2005. Rafsanjani lost the 2005 presidential election on the second ballot to Tehran Mayor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Rafsanjani was born on August 25, 1934.
